Extravagant Faith - Know that God Has Your Back
I love the dramatic story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel and I see a few parallels with what is happening today!
Firstly King Ahab accuses Elijah for the problems the nation is facing and Elijah responds that it is Ahab and his family who have caused trouble by forsaking the commandments of the Lord and following Baal, a god.
He calls for the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of the goddess of Asherah to meet at Mount Carmel.
Elijah addresses the people and asks how long they will linger between two opinions. If the Lord is God worship Him but if it is Baal, follow him. The people are silent!
Then two alters are built, one by the prophets of Baal, and one by Elijah. They will both call out to the Baal and to the Lord and the One who answers by fire, let Him be God
The prophets of Baal prepared the alter and called from morning til noon and there was no fire. The people then cut themselves and blood flowed out but still no fire.
Then Elijah tells the people to come near to him, he builds an alter, prepares the bull by cutting it into pieces and laying it on the wood and digging a trench around it. Then he instructs them to cover the the offering with four large jars of water, they do this three times!
At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah Says,
“Oh Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all these things at Your word.”
Then fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice and the wood, the stones and licked up the water that was in the trench.
WHEN the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, The Lord, He is God!
There is a nasty ending for the prophets of Baal who had misled the people - they are all slain!
As I look at this nation, I see a land where the people of God have been led astray by false prophets. Compromise has entered the church, pastors preach words that tickle the ears of their sheep rather than convict their hearts. Worship songs focus on us rather than lifting up the name of Jesus, the Holy Spirit has been ushered out of the church as He May upset or offend a new person. There isn’t faith for healing, there is a building but the people have no power!
Yet God is ready, as He always has been to pour out His spirit upon His people, to forgive them for following the ways of man - with programs and agendas, and turn to from their own ways and embrace His ways. To fill His people with more of Him So that they can go out into the world and usher in the kingdom.
Fear, doubt, worry, discouragement have no place in the hearts of God’s people. It’s time to “make Jesus visible” to all those we meet, to love, to offer hope. It’s time to allow the Holy Spirit to purify our hearts and consume our own hearts with fire from heaven. That we will be the living sacrifice.
What I love most about this story is Elijahs faith! He was totally confident in His God and I love the repentance that follows God’s demonstration of His power.
May we see this kind of faith in our land today!
Be Encouraged
Be Filled!
Usher in the kingdom
